Philosophy
Wright & Teague is the collective work of artist jewellers, Gary Wright and Sheila Teague, currently created and exhibited at their Mayfair gallery.
The artists create a metaphor for the universal themes of chaos and calm through jewellery. The seeming immutability of precious metals is transformed through a precise, intuitive understanding of craftsmanship driven by the energy of innovative ideas to become an object of serene beauty.
There is a development of a narrative, a distinct design sensibility, a flow of consciousness that continually refines, reconfigures, revisits cultural references to create jewellery that is eloquent and consequential. The seriousness of this endeavor is balanced with an assured fashion forward momentum to make iconic jewellery that is always relevant and contemporary. The circle of art, craft and fashion binds the cerebral with the artisanal.
Gary Wright and Sheila Teague are inspired, aesthetically and intellectually by the premier role enjoyed by jewellery in all societies, tribal, modern and ancient, its deep rooted spiritual connection to ritual and heritage.
Through precious metals, the relationship between form, volume, surface, movement, silhouette, the body, is questioned and explored. The significance of these relationships is examined through experimental and traditional craftsmanship. This imbues each design with its unique and distinctive personality.
Considered styling enables the evolving collection of figurative, sculptural and textural forms to be juxtaposed, a coherence of design that enables personal archives to be built and treasured. Clients trust the continuing narrative and integrity of the work to reflect and commemorate the highlights of their life.
The inscriptions, engraved in the most elegant typography including their own handwriting are not chosen as literal or prosaic but allegorical and suggestive, to resonate with the dreams of the wearer. Gems, precious, tribal, or vintage, each with their own symbolism add colour to strong silhouettes, highlighting the inherent beauty of gold, silver and platinum.
Collaborations include work with Oxfam, Swarovski, V&A, British Museum, Ruby & Millie cosmetics and numerous commissions for film and television.
Gary Wright and Sheila Teague studied and met at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. Wright & Teague was formed in 1984.
